Matija Škerbić

Assistant Professor of Ethics and Philosophy, President, University of Zagreb, European Association for the Philosophy of Sport

Matija Mato Škerbić is a pioneer in the philosophy and bioethics of sport in Croatia and the wider region. He currently serves as the President of the European Association for the Philosophy of Sport. Dr. Škerbić is employed as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, and teaches courses in the philosophy of sport to kinesiology students in Zagreb and Split (Republic of Croatia), Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and Latvia. He is also a collaborator on the Sport Ethics Colloquium program at Pennsylvania State University (USA). He is the author of two original books, the first of their kind in Croatian academia: *Philosophy of Sport: The Emergence and Development of a Discipline* (2021) and *Sport Bioethics: Challenges for the Future of Sport* (2024), as well as numerous scientific papers addressing ethical and bioethical issues in sport. His research focuses on topics such as doping and enhancement in sport, ethical dilemmas surrounding the use of enhancers and biotechnologies, the inclusion of transgender and intersex athletes in women’s categories, and the role and importance of intrinsic values and goods in sport, such as fair play and the pursuit of excellence. He has delivered lectures at more than 80 international conferences, including at some of the most prestigious universities in Europe, the United Kingdom, Asia, the Americas, and Australia.
